Terrell Starks Laid To Rest After Battle With Sickle Cell Disease.
With a mother's gentle touch, Valicia Starks placed her hand on her son Terrell Starks' casket Saturday as her husband pulled roses from a memorial arrangement.
Then, under a small tent at graveside after Terrell Starks' funeral, she hugged his older brother Cortez -- the only child they have left.
Valicia and Carl Starks have lost two children to sickle cell disease, an inherited blood disorder that disproportionately strikes African Americans. Terrell died Tuesday, a few days after his 24th birthday and just five years after his sister, Dominique, died at 17. Cortez, 25, is the only child without the disease.
